Larchmont and Mamaroneck

The diversity of architectural styles adds to the charm of Larchmont. Its streets are dotted with Victorians, Georgians, and Gothic Revivals. The town attracts people of all ethnic backgrounds (as is evidenced by the variety of houses of worship) as well as vocational backgrounds. Apartment dwelling is also available in the form of cooperative units and can be found mainly within walking distance of the train station.

Larchmont and neighboring Mamaroneck are served by the Mamaroneck Union Free School District. Consisting of four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, it has a reputation for excellence. In addition to a comprehensive academic program, the system is praised for its arts and athletic curricula. There are also several specialized programs available for students in need of special education, overcoming physical handicaps, and learning to deal with gifted capabilities. English as a second language is also a featured syllabus.

Mamaroneck has a long tradition of boat building and sailing. Surrounded by marinas and beach clubs, its harbor is the 'hub' of the area activity. John Richbell also purchased this area of "3 necks of land" --hence the Indian translation-- 'Mamaroneck'. Early settlers were farmers and fisherman; now the approximately 18,000 residents come from all walks of life. The variety of architecture and the picture-perfect waterfront setting makes life here appealing.

Mamaroneck Harbor provides mooring and docking for 400 boats in addition to a fishing pier and swimming beach. Numerous yacht, beach, tennis and golf clubs surround the area and the famed Winged Foot Golf Club was the site of both the 1974 and 1984 U.S. Open Golf Tournaments.

Metro-North train service is available from both Larchmont and Mamaroneck, and the trip into the city is a 35-minute commute. Bee-line bus service easily transports residents throughout the county and major interstate highways are easily accessible.
