White Plains The 48,000 residents of White Plains live in one of the most desirable small cities in the Northeast. Incorporated in 1683, White Plains' blend of suburban amenities and urban diversity make the city a unique and enjoyable place to live. Whether you're contemplating a singles studio or a stucco mansion, there are many reasons for calling White Plains home. Located in central Westchester, it is only 22 miles north of New York City. In 33 minutes you'll arrive at Grand Central via Metro North. An extensive bus, highway and parkway system radiates throughout the county. Equidistant from the Hudson River on the west, and Long Island Sound on the east, the Cross Westchester (I-287) transverses from point to point. Out of state destination? Frequent flights from the convenient county airport (within city limits) will speed you there. Both the White Plains Middle and the High School have been named National Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. Students in grades 6-8 in the Middle School receive a comprehensive academic education with a "team teaching structure" as well as a full program of extra-curricular and athletic programs. The high school offers over 300 courses including more than 20 honors and advanced placement subjects. Other challenging and useful courses include a five-year foreign language sequence, computer science, human relations, leadership training, work experience, learning strategies, and foreign exchanges. The enormous 75-acre campus permits White Plains High to offer more than 50 extra-curricular groups and field 47 athletic teams.
