Yonkers

The city of Yonkers extends 4 miles along the Hudson River, stretches 4 miles eastward to the Bronx River, is bordered on the south by New York City, and covers 18.3 square miles.  As the fourth largest city in New York State, Yonkers is currently home to about 200,000 residents.

Yonkers history dates back to the late 1640s when Adrian Van der Donck built one of the first saw mills in the New World.  The current name of Yonkers was derived from Van der Doncks nickname of Donk Herr, meaning young gentleman.   Several major inventions of Yonkers innovators propelled the citys fame in the 1800s, including the first elevator safety devices from Otis Elevator, the first elevated mass-transit system in the world, and inventions that modernized carpet manufacturing and the hat industry.  Notable Yonkers inventions in the 1900s included FM radio broadcasting and the synthetic plastic called Bakelite.  It may also be noted that the first game of golf in the United States was played in 1888 near Lake Avenue and North Broadway in Yonkers.

As a booming metropolis with an eye towards the renaissance of its waterfront, modern-day Yonkers boasts many desirable amenities.  Its recreational facilities are extensive, including 100 parks and playgrounds, an ice skating rink, 2 pools, 3 community centers, and 2 public golf courses.  You can learn about the history of the Hudson at the Hudson River Museum, visit Westchesters only planetarium, take in a performance at the Philipsburg Performing Arts Center, or shop at any of Yonkers numerous shopping plazas and malls.

Transportation from Yonkers to anywhere in the NY metro area is facilitated by 20 Bee-Line bus routes and the Metro-North Railroad which allows travelers to reach midtown Manhattan in under 30 minutes.  Four major airports are located within a 45-minute radius of the city.  Many of Westchesters main highways and thoroughfares bisect Yonkers for travel in any direction.

The Yonkers public school district serves 25,000+ students in 41 schools, including 32 elementary schools, 4 junior high schools, 4 senior high schools, and one junior/senior high school.  The school districts magnet program offers children more than 60 different areas of concentration from arts to sciences to business and more.  The city is also home to 23 parochial schools and 3 colleges, including 2 seminaries.

Yonkers current waterfront resurgence is bringing additional businesses and visitors to the city.  A public-access waterfront park and recreation pier, along with shopping, first-class restaurants, a hotel and conference center, and residential housing, are all part of the vision coming to life at the waters edge.  What a great time to become part of the Yonkers community!
