Brewster and Southeast

The Town of Southeast and village of Brewster are conveniently located in the southern-most portion of Putnam County, bordering Connecticut on the east, and at the junction of several major highways and routes: I-684, I-84, Routes 22, 312, 6 and 202. It is a superb location for commuters going south into New York via 2 Metro North stations serving the town, or east into Connecticut.

Brewster Village, the name best recognized as representing Southeast, occupies one square mile in the center of town. Brewster has a significant number of historic sites that date back to the 18th & 19th centuries. These include the Old Southeast Church, the Old Town Hall that now houses the Southeast Museum, the Enoch Crosby Homestead, Budd's Tavern, and Tilly Foster Mine, among many others. Many of these well-known landmarks offer tours or hold special events and celebrations throughout the year. Southeast also has 2 historic districts, the Milltown Area Historic District and the Starr Ridge Historic District, that contain many of the significant historic older homes of the area.

The moment you reach the intersection of I-84 and I-684, you are astounded by the beautiful view of hillsides, mountains, and valleys that welcomes you into Southeast. Many communities within the Town have their own lakes offering the surrounding residents vacation living right at home. Southeast offers many housing opportunities - single family homes, subdivisions, condominiums, rural estates, and farms. The town has room for new construction, yet has many fine established homes and neighborhoods. Taxes and housing prices in Southeast are generally lower than in nearby northeastern Westchester County, and this has attracted many young families into the area.

The area is rich in history and cultural attractions, as well as natural beauty. There are 4 major town parks, including a community center and town beach at Lake Tonetta. Outdoor enthusiasts have many local options for horseback riding, hiking, biking, fishing on streams, lakes or reservoirs, and a nearby ski area. Want to pick apples in the fall or purchase freshly baked fruit pies - visit Salinger's Orchards. Perhaps take in a community theater production - there's the Brewster Theater Company. Take the kids to see farm and wild animals - Tilly Foster Farm Conservation Area and Green Chimneys Farm are the places to go. Green Chimneys is a worldwide leader in animal-assisted therapy with its residential and day school programs for children with emotional, behavioral, social and learning challenges. The center provides education, therapy and outreach through programs that promote an appreciation of worth for all living things through providing care for animals and nature.
