Town of Mount Pleasant, including Pleasantville, Valhalla, Sleepy Hollow, Hawthorne, Pocantico Hills, and Thornwood

The charming Town of Mount Pleasant includes the villages and hamlets of Pleasantville, Valhalla, Hawthorne, Thornwood, Sleepy Hollow and Pocantico Hills. They combine a country feeling with cozy neighborhoods, a small-town environment with impressive sophistication and urban amenities. They are popular places to live and work within the heart of Westchester County. The area includes large expanses of open space, yet it is less than one hour by train to Manhattan. A favorable tax base is due to several locally headquartered large corporations.

The Rockefeller family has made significant cultural contributions to the town over the past century, including Rockefeller State Park Preserve, a popular destination for hikers and horseback riders, and Rockwood State Park overlooking the Hudson River. Kykuit, the family’s summer retreat, is now open to the public, attracting visitors from afar to tour portions of the mansion and its magnificent gardens. Stone Barns Center, an 80-acre organic farm and agricultural education center, was the most recent Rockefeller donation, and also the site of the acclaimed Blue Hill at Stone Barns restaurant. The Union Church in Pocantico Hills is a must-see for its Chagall and Matisse stained glass windows commissioned by the Rockefellers.

The Jacob Burns Film Center, a favorite of indie and classic filmgoers, and host to a variety of special and educational events, has brought new life to Pleasantville’s downtown. Another unique Pleasantville attraction is Usonia, a private community of 47 homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and his disciples.

Valhalla is probably best known as the location of the Kensico Dam Plaza. The park around the dam is host to numerous ethnic festivals, concerts, picnics, outdoor summer movies, and attracts year-round walkers, runners and roller-bladers.

Sleepy Hollow, settled in 1640, has been immortalized by its history and enchanting legends of Washington Irving’s “Headless Horseman”. As Tarrytown’s neighbor, it also offers an eclectic array of eateries, shops, galleries and many treasured national landmarks.

Hawthorne and Thornwood are primarily residential communities, offering residents a choice of moderately priced homes, condominiums and townhouses, convenient shopping and commuting, and plenty of parks, playgrounds and ball fields. A few tastefully designed executive parks blend easily into the landscape.

With a population of some 46,000 in an area embracing some 28 square miles, the town is served by 2 hospitals, 3 college campuses, 4 Metro North stations, as well as numerous golf courses, country clubs, senior & youth centers, and other desired amenities and services.
